Derrington’s 6th Local Food Festival!

The Village Hall in Derrington was buzzing with activity on Saturday 20 September as it hosted the 6th Derrington Local Food Festival. Welcoming people to this year’s event was the Mayor of Stafford Borough, Derrington’s very own Councillor Ray Sutherland.

The day began rather overcast and a little rainy, but eventually brightened up. Despite the weather the event attracted a good turn-out from local residents plus many more from further afield.

People met Owls, found out more about Bumble bees, had a go at making ‘Wildlife Pizzas, dissected owl pellets and could have their face painted by a real life fairy!
The Owl Experience from Haughton brought some orphaned barn owls, helping to illustrate a talk by Helen Cottam of the Barn Owl Action Group, describing the plight of these magnificent birds and the steps being taken to ensure their survival in Britain. The focus then turned to bumblebees as Ron Rock of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust explained how these native, generally solitary insects are vital for farmers and growers, and how we can provide them with food and nest sites in our gardens.

Visitors came along to buy locally grown produce – and to meet the people that had grown or made it! Lots of folk also brought along their own garden fruit and veg for the ‘Grow and Show’ table, where there were lots of prizes to be won and our judge, Clive Plant, had the onerous task of picking the winners!

And of course, ever popular were the delights of the famous Derrington WI coffee and cakes stall, once more demonstrating that home baking is local food at its best!

The event concluded with a Grand Auction of produce in aid of Village Hall funds, this year conducted again by auctioneer Alan Merrick.

The Food Festival was organized as part of the Derrington Way Ahead low-carbon community project, to encourage a more sustainable and resilient local community, and is supported by Stafford Borough Council. We are very grateful to the following for kindly donating prizes or sponsoring this event including Bean EnCounter, Stafford Gatehouse Theatre, Salter Street Toys and Models, Sustainability Matters and Stafford Borough Council and many thanks to all the fabulous groups and individuals who supported the Food Festival in lots of other ways!
